When Did Halloween Become About Sex?

This is kind of a rhetorical question. I already know the answer. I too am guilty of dressing up as a French Maid once or twice in my twenties. Now that I am a Mom to four daughters I see things A WHOLE LOT differently.

Three of my daughters are still young enough where they want to be characters. But, my 10 year old who is the size of a teenager, is a different story. She is wearing teen size clothes and with teen size clothes there is a lot of inappropriate clothing out there. I think not only inappropriate for a teenage girl, but for the many tweens out there who are the size of teenagers already.

I have to sit back and wonder why there is so much sexuality in Halloween when it is a child's holiday. I realize that it is a night where adults can dress up as whatever they like as well (slutty or not). But for a country that is trying to get the teen pregnancy rate down - is letting your kids sexy really the right message?

  1. I had that problem when my daughter hit her tween years. She wanted to dress up in something that all the other kids would think cool. It was my job to keep the slutty out of the outfit - it was harder than I realized it would be. So many teen girl and womens costumes are so much on the sexy side. Good luck!

  2. No it's not the right message but sex has always sold. They are going for the money. Sad indeed.

Have a terrific day Lydia. Big hug. :)

  3. Heck, I have the problem with MY costume! a's going to be Alice (and trust me, I'm having issues finding stuff in her size that's just plain little girl cute!) and I'm going to be The Red Queen. Most of the costume barely cover my bottom! I don't think the Trunk or Treat peeps at my mom's church would appreciate that! I finally decided to just put a long black skirt under it, but it shouldn't be so hard to dress appropriately for Halloween...especially when the weather is so cold for over half the country!

  4. I have the same problem about a few years ago when I went to the party city costume store. Ugh it's disgusting, about every teen costume is a stripper costume. They used to have innocent cute costumes, but not any more. They even make things that you think that would be innocent very suggestive. I even checked online thinking it was different but no chance it, the online stores were not any better & some were much worse.

  5. I agree, Halloween is too sexual these days. In the words of Lindsey Lohan on Mean Girls, "In the regular world, Halloween is when kids dress up in costumes and beg for candy. In girl world, Halloween is the one night a year when a girl can dress like a total slut and no other girls can say anything about it."
